Chris Rock Needs to Worry About His Dated Pop Culture References, Not Hosting the Oscars

A Nicole Brown Simpson joke in 2022?

Chris Rock had a show in Downtown Phoenix at the Arizona Financial Center on Sunday night. I’m sure everybody had a gangbusters time watching one of the best in the business cook with gas. Really, just hot diggity dog, laughing that hard must get you a one-way ticket to playing some back seat bingo, ya dig?

Anyhow, during the show, Rock mentioned that the Academy asked him to return and host the Oscars for the third time. This would surely get a lot of folks to tune in, considering The Slap that went down earlier this year. Producers saw an opportunity and jumped at it. You can’t blame them; those ratings would almost certainly be the bee’s knees.

Rock also joked that if he came back and returned as host, it’d be like asking Nicole Brown Simpson “to go back to the restaurant.” Wow, that joke… sucks, makes no sense, and is really outdated. It’s almost as awful as someone speaking to you in 1950s slang. Ain’t that a bite.

Rock is one of the greatest stand-up comedians of all time. If anybody tells you anything different, they're lying to you. However, when he isn’t talking about relationships or politics, the 57-year-old funnyman has a tendency to use jokes and references that are so old they have hip problems.

Rock has been citing a variation of how fine Halle Berry is for more than 30 years. Old-ass pop cultural references are what got him in this predicament in the first place. A G.I. Jane joke? That movie came out in 1997! And it was a flop that barely anybody liked! What are you going on about, Chris? Talk about how Future is a hoe or about Timothée Chalamet’s awful rapping. Something new, please. Or else, get bent.
