Multiple outlets are reporting news that Bronny James, the 18-year-old son of NBA legend LeBron James, is in stable condition after collapsing from a cardiac arrest at a USC team practice.
The freshman player was practicing with the team on Monday when it happened and was immediately taken to a hospital; he's no longer in ICU, Sports Illustrated reports.
The James family released a statement through a family spokesperson: "LeBron and Savannah wish to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes."
It's the second straight year a Trojan player has suffered from cardiac arrest. Last summer, center Vince Iwuchukwu collapsed during a USC practice; Uwuchukwu recovered and is still playing.
In February, Jackson State football player, Kaseem Vauls, had a similar medical emergency after complaining about stomach pains.
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin tweeted his support for Bronny and the James family. Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during a Monday Night Football game.
Although it's relatively rare, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in young athletes; Mayo Clinic says about 1 in 50,000 to 1 in 80,000 young athletes die of SCA each year. It's typically caused by cardiovascular abnormalities, blunt chest injury or too much strain on the heart.
